While “Princess” may only be a ceremonial role in the real world, within the context of the show, the Princesses have not only great power, but also very large responsibility.
We have been shown Celestia’s leadership, wisdom, and diplomatic abilities from time to time when she has appeared on screen. And their heroism.
The modern day equivalent would be our current political system.
Twilight was chosen by Celestia as her personal pupil due to her potential. And was made to work hard and prove she was worthy of Celestia’s guidance.
I think that’s a great lesson for both boys and girls. That if you put in the effort and study and work as hard as you can, you can aspire to great things. Even something like Prime Minister of Canada, or President of the United States.

I love Twilight to death, but I still don’t think she has the right amount of composure, comion, or experience to become a alicorn the caliber of those we’ve already seen.
Yes, Twilight has a laundry list of reasons not to give her political power of any kind. Her list is still somewhat shorter than any high-ranking politician I can name from the last 20 years or so. Not just national leaders, politics in general tends to attract folks who have no business being in power.
Has lost control of her magic to the point of setting her hair on fire or blowing her house 30 feet in the air twice due to unstable emotions.
Lived with a princess for years yet still treats her like the infallible, into the dungeon you go type Goddess.
I’d make her a princess…after about a couple years of therapy.
My only hope is that the only reason she’s becoming an Alicorn Princess is not because she’s the best choice right now, its that her TIARA that’s her element of harmony is awakening. The elements THEY NOW OWN BECAUSE DISCORD’S BACK. What else would that turn her into then a princess? That means…
…Rebalancing begins. Badass awakenings for the other 5 in Season 4.
