He said that is why he left he show. He liked the story potential, but after the first season it began shifting further and further away from that and he was disappointed and no longer interested.  
There’s been talk of a reboot and he has expressed interest if they go with the original sci-fi orientation of the show.

I don’t blame him. Fox executives really foxxed up the series by assuming creative control. The first season was amazing and the second was okay but then they ruined it.
