In many cultures your home country is called “motherland”, might have something to do with land in general being associated with femininity “mother earth”, for example because earth gives life or something.
It’s similar to how in many cultures all ships (sea vessels) are considered female. Probably because captains are almost always male, and they are ‘married’ to their vessel. Culture is fascinating.

I think it’s because of thing called “grammatical gender”, and both words Russia and Ukraine is feminine in their native languages
