Context: I got a lot of push-back on this piece:>>3315509
The only piece of criticism that I got that I actually considered somewhat valid is that Ukraine and Palestine are different situations and it muddles the issue to lump them together. So I’m keeping the old one up and standing by it, but I decided to also make two separate images.
@Stellarator
I played with it some more…only Japanese does weird stuff, other similar languages like Chinese or Korean don’t.
If you just do Слава it translates as Slava, which I think is direct Roman alphabet translation, it means “Glory”. If you do Слава Селестії! it just ed thru unchanged. If you do Слава нашому Богові! it translates as “I love you”. нашому Богові! is “I’m sorry”. Just Богові! gives bogoviii!, which may or may not mean “God” or “Lord”.
I think it’s a bug - Google’s AI has gone off the rails here.
@Stellarator
That’s neat. I wonder if it’s intentional or a bug - Google used to have a lot of easter eggs hidden in their apps, like if you asked for driving directions from San Fran to Honolulu it would tell you to get a jetski, but most of them are gone now.
Side note: I had Google translate set on translating from Japanese instead of “detect language”, and initially didn’t notice…and when given the Ukrainian statement written in Cyrillic, google translate gave the translation “The Lord of the Rings! The Lord of the Rings!” XD
I just…what? Normally if it is set to translate FROM a language, and you give it something not in that language, it just es it through unchanged.
@Gnot Even
Exactly.
The US did, but we were fighting a war from across an ocean where the country itself was more or less safe, not being invaded or bombed directly, with a couple of exceptions.
@Stellarator
There’s ample precedent for not holding elections in wartime - the UK, for instance, did not hold parlimentary elections during either WW1 or WW2.
@Background Pony #382A
It would be both absurd and logistically impossible to hold an election in the middle of an existentially threatening invasion in which big chunks of the country are occupied. This is in accordance with Ukrainian law.
If he hangs on to power and doesn’t hold elections after the war (as has happened in some countries) then that criticism would be valid, but that hasn’t even had a chance to come up yet. Until then, he is a legitimately elected leader acting in a way that is both necessary and legal.

So, I’m going to try to give the benefit of the doubt and not get hostile…but it’s worth pointing out that the moment someone brings up the tired talking point of complaining about DEI, they sound like someone who at any moment will start frothing about things being “woke” and most people are going to ignore whatever else they have to say. The overwhelming majority of times anyone brings that up, it’s as a not very thinly veiled racist dogwhistle, and that will affect how you come off to people.
That said, being able to just not think about “politics” is a great privilege that some people have, but a lot of people don’t. You can’t leave politics alone if politics won’t leave you alone.
And frankly…with a lot of what is going on in much of the world, “centrist” is basically just a polite way of saying “refusing to take a stand on important things, and just caving to the worst people”.
@Sg Stormchaser
Because most people or a lot of people here are either apolitical/neutral or centrist. I don’t think the average is here for someones social and political takes, opinions, or statement, people are here mostly for cute ponies or porn. Though that doesn’t mean that they are ignorant of social and political issues, they just don’t wanna be politically plugged in 24/7 that most people here have no control of, and is happening on the other side of the world. Politics is such a mentally draining thing to engage with, and will terminally brain rot you, there are more better things that you could be doing or worrying about, than worrying about things you can not control.
If you still think that people are just “allergic to politics” than look at what’s going on in gaming culture with sweet baby and DEI initiatives, we don’t want social and politics in our hobbies.

Huh. Could be.

Ah, I see.
I don’t think they mean you. I think they’re talking about people who downvote images because they’re related to politics.
My reasoning for what?
