I woke about as placidly as one could expect when a telephone’s shrill ringing was jabbing daggers into my ears. I ended up falling onto the floor as I hurriedly attempted to disentangle myself from the covers I had been so comfortably wrapped up in mere moments ago, which did no favors for my mood.
I had no idea who thought it’d be a good idea to call me at this ungodly hour, but I was ready to give them a piece of my mind. I finally managed to drag myself over to the phone and pick up the receiver.
“Ugh, this had better be good.”
“Detective? Oh, sorry, did I wake you up? It’s Twilight.”
Lemme tell you, nothing inspires politeness quite like hearingthaton the other end of the line. I just about started harder than when the phone rang.
“P-princess? Sorrysorry, I didn’t know you’d be calling.”
“It’s fine. If anything, I’m sorry about the short notice. That said, we need to meet up immediately to discuss a case of the utmost importance.”
Well, this was certainly escalating. Seems my next few days weren’t going to go at all how I thought they would.
“No problem, princess. Lemme just… throw something on and I’ll be right over.”
“Thanks so much, detective. Tell you what, I’ll treat you to dinner while we talk. I’ll even wear that dress you like.”
A record scratch suddenly sounded off in my mind.
“…I beg your pardon?”
“That dress I was wearing when we first met. I know it’s your favorite.”
I blinked several times, trying to process this.
“Uh, I don’t think I ever commented on what you were wearing back then.”
I heard her giggle.
“You didn’t, but you certainly took your time looking me over. Don’t worry, I take it as a compliment.”
