In of transparency they are. Gifs can only have fully transparent pixels or fully opaque which leads to harsh edges (loss of information about alpha channel)

It’s a good format for animations, it’s just rare.
By the way, GIFs are technically not a lossy format. It has only a very limited amount of colors it can display (from a 1byte color table that can only store 256 colors).

I’m using booru(s) more as a way to archive my pics rather then to show them off. And gifs are a lossy format. So I’m using apng as a way to archive all frames losslessly without having to create a separate post for each one.
