Really, it should have all been perfect, if it weren’t for the low hum that permeated the air.
“Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu…..”
Cozy gritted her teeth, pulling her book closer to her snout as if that might block out the sound. It didn’t. Taking a deep breath, she let all traces of irritation fade from her face before looking across the table at the mass of pink and purple mane which was the source of the wierd rumbling groan. Flurry’s keening had mostly petered out, but she still kept at it, holding on to the grumbling note as it crept higher and higher, as if the world would end if she took another breath.
Cozy would probably be a bit more impressed with her best friend’s lung capacity if she weren’t studying for three tests right now.
Cut that out, Flur.
“Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu…..”
“Flur, you okay? What happened?”

The hum stopped. Flurry, her face still pressed to the table, took a deep breath.
“History happened.”
One pale hoof reached under the tangled mass of mane, pulling out a battered-looking textbook. Cozy plucked Crystal Camaraderie- a Brief History of Frozen North Politics from Flurry’s grasp, flipping through the pages. She’d read it already, almost as soon as Flurry’s history tutor had hoofed it off to her as extra reading for the Empire’s heir. Whatever it was Flurry needed from her, she was prepared.
“Well, what is it you don’t understand?” She asked. “I could help you if you want.”
Flurry let out another-shorter- groan.
“All those wars and treaties and trade deals…” Her voice was muffled by the crystal table. “…and yaks smashing things! Why do yaks keep smashing everything?!”
“Because smashing allows them to generate their own magic, to protect themselves from the wild weather, like we do with the Crystal Heart. And you.” Cozy tacked on at the end. Flurry’s role in protecting the Empire from the Eternal Storm was something she never let anyone forget.
Flurry grumbled, still not looking up.
“Well, the yaks are our closest allies. They’re the ones who will shelter and protect us if the Crystal Heart ever fails. Which is more likely than ever now because all of the wear and tear-”
“See? Completely useless because that’s never going to happen.”
Was it her imagination, but were Flurry’s shoulders stiffer than usual? “Because we’ve got me. My magic will keep everyone safe.”
“We don’t know if it’s strong enough to protect the whole Empire-”
“It will be! It’s destiny!”
“…Uh, Flur? Are you okay?”

Flurry Heart rubbed her forehead, an exhausted look on her face.
“Don’t you start talking about responsibility too.” She said. “It’s always ‘when you become Empress’ this or ‘after your coronation’ that… I’m so sick of it. If everyone wants me to be Empress because I’m the only one who can fight the Storm, why can’t I just do that and leave all the boring stuff to nerds like you? Everyone can stick to what they’re best at, and we’ll all be happy. We should start at that now, actually. Finish my essay for me?”
“Me?”
“Yes, you. You’ve read the book already,so you’ll get it done a lot quicker. Besides, it’s good practice for the both of us. You get to prepare to be my royal advisor, I get to practice the super important and royal skill of delegation.”

Cozy bit her lip, her mind running through her schedule for the next week. Student council meeting, chess club… she knew shouldn’t have signed up as a student tutor, but she’d done it anyway in a fit of desperation- and yes, she still had three tests to study for. Flurry complained about how much work being the (not even official!) crown princess was, but she wasn’t the one who had to give everything she got for the slimmest chance of getting into the history books.
Maybe she had been quiet for too long, because Flurry was starting to fidget uncomfortably. ”…or I could just ask someone else. I think Firelight Amber might-”
“No.” Cozy said, surprising even herself with her harshness. And she couldn’t. No one else could have this- not Amber, not anyone. If Flurry started to depend on other creatures, that was it for her. No amount of extracurriculars was ever going to open the same doors as being Flurry Heart’s best friend. So what if she didn’t have the time? She’d make the time.
Flurry tilted her head in confusion, then shrugged it off.
“Okay, thanks. I don’t know what I’d do without you, Cozy.” She stood up, a wide grin on her face. Oblivious. “Now, how do you feel about ice cream?”
“It’s expected if not taken for granted that Flurry Heart will be the one to rule the Empire once her mother retires. She’s always been the kingdom’s darling, especially after receiving her cutie mark in fighting the Frozen North’s wild weather, which the damaged Crystal Heart can no longer fully protect them from. While Polaris is technically in the running, it’s only a matter of time.
As much as Flurry enjoys the attention, she doesn’t really see the point of preparing for her duties. After all she’s going to be surrounded by ponies like Cozy Glow, who are clearly better suited to what they’re doing. Cozy, meanwhile, is growing more and more resentful of her friend, who couldn’t imagine what she would give to take her place.” - DreamCatchinTillDawn
