The unstrapping part could be true, but this pose would damage their spines for sure since they are quadrupeds, pretty much only Lyra sits like that as far as I can . It could work with a more marked tilt to rest their buttocks and for limp legs if they are paralyzed from the waist down, but in Skye’s case it wouldn’t make sense since her hind hooves are fully functional.

Perhaps the ponies found that this structure was more practical in some way over time. In particular Skye doesn’t always need her wheels, she has to be able to get out sometimes. This is easier to exit than the other model of pony wheels, as there’s nothing to unstrap at all.
As you said, it’s not like her hind legs are paralyzed.
Which of those is it considered politically incorrect to use nowadays? English isn’t my first language so I’m not actualized.
