I mean, most all EL wire can be freely trimmed to arbitrary lengths. That’s one of the things so brilliant about it. From an electronics perspective, it’s just a light-emitting capacitor that needs some form of AC fed into it; it’s really not picky.

Oh, almost certainly, it’d be less expensive. If we limited overall width to about one foot (30 cm), and one could obtain the type of EL wire you can trim to length, and in all those colors, of course.
I think the trick would be finding a vendor who’d allow you to choose whatever colors you want, but only charged you for the total length.

Random thought: Electroluminescent wire might be better suited for a smaller-scale, potentially more affordable implementation of this? Might also look better, because EL is more anisotropic than even the best LED diffs.

Pricing it out just now…yeah, it’s gonna take a while. The stuff’s not super-expensive, but for workable dimensions, e.g. let the overall width be one meter or so, we’re looking at $200-300, at least.
Color availability is another problem. For whatever reason, purple and orange aren’t as common as others, and cyan? Oh man, forget it. But who knows? I’ll just keep my eyes open for a workable solution, and hope for the best.

Do it.
