I’m convinced that that was the show we went to solely because the theater teachers in charge of scheduling everything wanted to see it and not because they thought it was appropriate for twelve year olds. Because it isn’t. HO BOY I was not prepared for some of the stuff it had in it.

Yeah, that stuff is heavy but I don’t see that it would damage kids in some way.
When I was 12 I was taken to a concentration camp and they didn’t censor the picture or mince words about the horrors that went on there and that was all real rather than fictional.
Like I said it does seem pretty straightforward and timeliness. A creepy stalker falling in love with a woman and doing horrible things to eliminate the competition. It’s certainly brutal but it’s not super complicated to the point where kids wouldn’t understand it.
I just disagree with the notion that kids should be shielded from the fact that truly evil things happen in this world and that a lot of people are capable of great evil if it is encouraged of them.

it’s less of the political and economic aspect and more of how the Phantom hangs a man and we see his corpse fall on stage. and the Phantom later tries to do the same thing to Christine’s other love interest.

Why not? What would happen if they saw it?

Uh bro they were 12-ish alot of stuff isn’t appropriate for that age.
Why wouldn’t it be “appropriate”? Shouldn’t kids decide such things? The only thing that wouldn’t be “appropriate” if it has a lot of political/economic commentary that isn’t really understandable if you don’t know much about these things. But Phantom of the opera does seem pretty straightforward and timeless.
