I have to say, Crackle’s dessign does make more sense for an Earth Dragon than Spike’s.
I’ve always believed that the mere fact that Spike was able to learn a teleportation spell, and that that he’s actually able to grow/shrink like that due to greed/generosity, was all because of him having being hatched with magic, which made him a magic dragon.
The only problem with this theory is how Zecora knew so much about what was going on with Spike in SomE, even though magic dragons can’t really be that common.
In fact, considering unicorns/alicorns are the only known magical race so far (unless Im forgetting something), and how ponies apparently have had minimal with dragons through history, then the whole magic hatching thing probably didn’t happen a lot.
Anyway, bat ponies are bat ponies. The offsprings of a dragon and a pony are called dracony, or kirin, but I haven’t heard of bat ponies being such as well.

We don’t actually know where the bat ponies come from. Hell, I don’t think they even mention what they are called.
I may be just naive about this stuff, but from what I know sterility != can’t have sex. It just means can’t have babies.
