@Background Pony #60FF
That is actually, very much my thoughts on it.
If it isn’t linear, it really isn’t a typical JRPG.
Pen and paper are the best kinds of RPGs, games like SS13 are a bit below.
@aperture_tech
-You left out the linear stories that allow little to no interaction from the player, soundly defeating the entire point of a ROLE playing game…
-And everyone being pants on head retarded in order to drive the story forward.
-And Tetsyua Nomura’s character designs in general (“needs moar belts and zippers!”).
-The entire genre of JRPG’s has been in a decade long downward spiral of stagnation that makes even what COD has done to the FPS genre pale by comparison.
@SquiggyBomb
The whole pint of a genre is to categorize similar things.
Also, JRPG is a subgenre.
Even less room for interpretation of a genre. The majority of JRPGs I’ve played are uninteresting.
@aperture_tech
Turn based combat kicks ass though. You complain about it being slower and more tactical when that’s exactly the point. That doesn’t make it bad that just means you don’t like it. And Lost Odyssey has the most non-anime asthetic I’ve seen in a JRPG. And not all JRPGs HAVE turn-based battle systems. Things like FF7 and Chrono Trigeer had real-time battle systems. I think your unfairly biasing a whole genre to fit into your narrow mindset.
@SquiggyBomb
You don’t have to when you play 5 that are just like that.
I don’t dislike Japanese games at all, I can’t get enough of Metal Gear in particular, and while WRPGs are far from greatness, JRPGs aren’t much fun to me.
Turn based combat is the biggest issue.
@SquiggyBomb
-terrible combat system that belongs in a strategy game, takes a lot of fun out of the game
-obligatory huge sword guy
-emphasis on visuals over gameplay
-huge open green field is where most combat takes place
-anime style characters in similar “super whacky” fantasy worlds we’ve seen before
A truly awesome game. Add a ‘summon’ mechanic and a few Chocobos roaming the place and it would have been the Final Fantasy we wanted. Sadly we got FF13. What an abortion-esque waste of talent that was!
Some of the stories just left me feeling ambivalent, but yeah, a few of them were realllly great. I also liked the asymmetry of having the immortal and mortal player characters. Very well done. Great RPG. I would enjoy pony fanart of it =p
The Thousand Years of Dreams bits were likely some of the most feels inducing things I’ve ever seen in a game. I still legitimately cry reading some of them. Just one of the important things that I think make this game a work of art.
Holy crap! I think I got a good 20 hours or so into this game before forgetting about it (for whatever) reason, I’m quite ashamed to it since it was very good (especially the short stories, as everyone justly points out). Thanks for reminding me, I think I’ll pick it back up right now.

To summarize, look at these graphs.
The whole pint of a genre is to categorize similar things.

Well, most of the interesting JRPGs have only been around for this decade.

Yoooouuuuuu haven’t played alot of JRPGs have you?

What you got something against JRPGs?
Into the trash faster than Rainbow Dash.
I suppose I can give you that point. But regardless, Lost Odyssey deserves a bit more attention than it’s gotten.
My 360 is on the fritz. I’ll need to borrow a friends.

@SquiggyBomb
Please do. Playing this game is an absolute treat.
