Considering horses actually fight like that, those golden shoes are probably weighted for greater impact. We’ve seen pegasus guards use their wings to block age in a manner similar to how human guards would use spears, even including the audio cue that cartoons use for letting you know a weapon is sharp. Possibly equestrian guards and soldiers are trained primarily in CQC and equipped with gear that improves it.
In short, we see a comical slap-fight. Ponies see a brawl with brass knuckles.
They probably weren’t using weapons because they were fighting ponies.
I could see them trying to stab a bunch of manticores or griffins but this war was against their own kind, so Celestia commanded them to use non-lethal attacks. And it seems they even spared using unicorns because direct magic lasers hurt more. Not everyone is as talented as Twilight and can use a paralysis spell on a whim.
