These images of the main six with Starlight are kinda interesting because we’ve only gotten the slightest glimpse of her personality post-friendship, so there’s a slight aspect of speculation to how she’s drawn in some of these.
I feel Starlight exists as a possible addition to the mane 6 because of Sunset Shimmer being a now ‘fan favorite’ character. SS proved they could add to the main (EG) cast and the fandom wouldn’t riot. You are right, they can’t add SS to the main show, because the spin-off is still doing well.
I also think it is more likely Starlight is a character that would be allowed to stumble or make mistakes more than the rest of the mane 6. I could easily see her giving bad advice to the CMC unintentionally or just being quick to jump to wrong conclusions. She could be an easy tool for the writers to use to go back to old lessons from earlier seasons and go a different direction or simply put a new spin on them.
While similar to Twilight, Sunset Shimmer seems to still have a bit of a temper that can flare up and a lot of self doubt. Starlight probably won’t share these traits, but will probably have some other new character flaws that will set her apart from the mane 6, as well as SS, but we won’t see what they are till the new season. That is, if she s the cast as a regular, or even a semi-regular.

We wouldn’t even have the same movies without Sunset, since she’s integral to the plots of all three. So without her we wouldn’t even have them.
I personally cannot fathom why people want her to be a new member of the mane 6 in the first place. From the character we have now, she’s not fit to play any role besides a budding leader. She has nothing to offer for the Mane 6 otherwise with Twilight around and the much more friend-experienced pony versions of her friends.
I lean towards Starlight more in this case, mainly because she’s a blank slate and we don’t know what she has to offer to the group personality/talent-wise yet.
For now, and if I ever manage to get my fanfic off the ground, I imagine Starlight as kind of like a freshman student in college: running wild (in moderation) with her new lease on life, that being friendships, but having to weigh that with her quite taxing studies under Princess Twilight’s tutorship.
I think that’s one of the things they do with Starlight most if they go the Mane7-route: Have Starlight put under exhausting demands of training and study. Show that Twilight really had to go through hell to be Celestia’s student (as we’ve seen she has, but she’s always loved reading anyway, not everybody does)
@PonyPon I don’t know for sure what you want me elaborate on, so I’ll explain both. I like Sunset Shimmer a bit more than Starlight, but do not want her in Equestria (at least until the movies are over). She has a much better position as main character of her own series, and would be only shadowed in the FiM universe. She’s also the main reason that I enjoy Equestria Girls, and without her the movies are ruined. For Starlight’s design, I feel it fits in the color palette that MLP typically uses more than Sunset (who had to have her colors changed even).
@pwingbrony God finally someone gets it. I have to also agree with my fellow Background Pony on her design, it fits more. I think that’s because they didn’t know what they were going to do with Sunset when they first designed her.

Sunset is better off being the star of the EQG universe. She is the best recurring quality of those movies now, as far as I’m concerned.
