I think there’s a solid core of truth here; in my view it is pretty contrived, but I just mostly overlook it and soon the comic will move onto some other stuff. Eventually. The art is excellent as always, too.
I mean, I wouldn’t necessarily jump to the Mary Sue label (I don’t think she is myself, the problems with her character are conceptual rather than intrinsic), but it is kind of eyeroll worthy when you think about it. Especially given how incompetent the Royal Guard seem to be, plus we never see any females in it, nor are any ever mentioned, so… it is kind of obvious the author/artist is just going off into their little fantasy world within a fantasy world. But that’s okay. All fiction has elements of that to one degree or another.
And plenty of people enjoy it, which is the point: to entertain. I respect that some people like stuff I don’t like, and likewise, I hope that people can respect when others don’t like it, for whatever reason. Such is life. But, no, you’re not the only one looking forward to this stuff wrapping up quickly.

The way I was seeing it play out is she kick launches herself off the first bugs head with force that slams him into a stalagmite he was unknowingly hovering over for a critical stun. Reaching a stalactite where she simultaneously auto corrects thru somersault to plant both hind legs on the cave ceiling and shatters it’s connection with a left forehoof and launch it down to the second bug that has unwittingly placed itself right above its stunned partner. Said stalactite pierces it’s carapace upper neck region with such force it brings it down upon the first bugs head and partly pinning the second to the stalagmite as well. Cloudy thus launches herself off the cave ceiling with the effect of a buzz saw somersault and finishes the job by superhero landing on the stalactite, forcing to to completely split bug one’s head and fully force bug two’s down thru the stalagmite.

I brought up the traits thing to address that just because maud and pinkie can jack hammer a rock doesnt mean their mom has to be given a battle soaked past to justify where they got it from. Thats all. Of course I see all their other traits. Now here’s whats good, you highlighted that Cloudy blames herself for her daughters’ idiosyncrasies and that it tormented her so much that she went to drastic measures. Now thats a flaw, not being a retired captain but showing how it did work against her, because as the other guy said just being strict isnt a flaw if it doesnt have an adverse affect on the character in some way. Also I said earlier I am quite open to the fact that the story isn’t over yet and I could be completely wrong in thinking she has no flaws, which it seems like I will be. Up to this point youve revealled more flaws about her in these comments than you have in the actual story. So I spoke preemptively. I concede to that. But I still stand by what I said that if she takes out two monsters using her barehooves despite being docile for so many years, it comes off as highlighting a badass. She was a royal guard? Fine. But she just had to be not only a captain but the “dragon” lady of the force, who could throw down huge beasts on her own. Some people will be cool with that, but I think its a bit much is all. Just wanted to get that out there. Though I will say that I could have been less condescending in my first comment.

Well the plan was to make Cloudy use stalagtites and other geological knowhow to beat these monsters into submission, but as a collective “fuck you” now she will one punch man them. ♥
