It’s my personal headcanon that changelings look different depending on how they get the love they feed on. Changelings that earn the love the honest way will start looking more benign and aesthetically pleasing while those that those that get their love the more traditional, deceptive way are the ones that look the more creepy way they’ve looked so far.

It would have to be managed like regulated animal hunting or fishing seasons. I think historically when ever a large gathering of changelings decide to start feeding on a population of ponies, they just open up the flood gates and start sucking what ever love they can get.
I always figured that if changelings could get hugs, love, and attention from ponies willingly, they wouldn’t need to go and take it.
It might take a long time for the idea to catch on, and there could be a few hiccups on the way. But if it could or actually does work, everyone could stand to benefit.
