It is not about the blades biting into each others’ edges causing nicks. I literally recreated this with 3 knives; two of the same make one of different steel. The difference in the hardness of the steels caused them to grind against each other along the sides of the knife made from different steel.
Doing the same test with 3 knives of the same steel I found very little resistance; and after finely processing the edges I could barely feel any resistance at all.
Whatever knowledge of ‘western blades’ you have is clearly lacking
So many people who know nothing of how metals work. That sword being blocked will have it’s edge ‘bind’ against the other two due to friction; and the fact the larger sword is much broader near the guard/hilt means it will apply more pressure on the two guarding as it gets closer, which will make it bind more. The effect is stronger if the metals involved here have very different hardness, the softer metal abrading and causing more friction.
Granted, polished steels of the same hardness may slide on each other somewhat easily.
All that aside, it is one of the stupidest ways to block

Assuming they’ve been clashing like this and it’s not that moment just as he blocked. In which case, love to see an opponent react that quick without hesitating and or making their movement rather obvious and not get countered. XD
I made reference to nicks in response to your strange and vague assertion that ‘nicks can only do so much’.
Uhh… unless I’m missing something, he never brought up nicks at all
Then why did you bring up nicks in the edges?
Again, this guard position has nothing to do with nicks on the edges catching and slowing down a thrust (which is not a stroke).
I meant nicks creating drag in a stroke benefiting the defense, not the offense.

Nicks can only do so much, especially on western blades, but they still do some things okay, yeah? :j

How do you think he got that first scar?
Sigh. Some people never learn~
Well ideally you don’t just hold it there, once it’s caught between the blades you push it out to the side
Hey. It ain’t the length of your blade that matters. It’s how long you can keep it stabbing.
they’re called short swords for a reason
Considering it’s an OC, I’m biased toward believing this explanation.

Got it: Azure Night. :)
Sounds legit
