“Spirited Away” is the film that “Your Name” beat out for the top spot; if “Your Name” isn’t mainstream, then I don’t know what is. Regardless, If that’s really the case, then it only serves as yet more proof that the academy awards is a terrible place to scope out real quality films.
Because the Oscars are biased towards western movies. As far as I can recall, only “Spirited Away” ever received one and that was really just one. Which still fits to the requirement I named above, because that movie is more mainstream and less Japan-oriented than what Ghibli usually does and has therefore a bit of a western animation feel to it.
So it’s a no-brainer why they chose it anyway.
The Oscars’ aversion against japanese animation is no argument for the MLP: FiM movie not getting any.

I still wouldn’t keep my hopes up. “Kimi no na wa (Your Name)”, the highest grossing anime film of all time and whose director is now being hailed as the next Miyazaki, didn’t even receive a nomination.

I doubt it’s going to win any awards of any kind
I also get the feeling it may be a disappointment to the fans but time will tell.
Except that the MLP: FiM movie is going to be one that doesn’t feel like a toy commercial. It’s too distinct and high-quality for that, MLP: FiM was never a real toy commercial anyway. Those don’t have such a high quality.
The Lego Movie had Lego stones everywhere, of course it was a blatant toy commercial, so that is why it didn’t get any nominees. That won’t happen with this movie.
That’s going to be a thing, I can already tell. Just a question of how many awards it will grab in the end.
This will be the first time I’m going to watch the Oscars, all the way through.
Maybe Bronystate even livestreams them, that would be great!
I’ve heard that LEGO wasn’t actually interested in making a movie at first because they didn’t think they needed ment like that

Nope, everyone loved the Lego movie and it wasn’t even nominated. Because it was a toy commercial.
We can apply the same logic to MLP
Of course, the MLP movie winning Best Picture is extremely unlikely. Best Animated Feature, though… 🤔
