Let be honest, this movie is weaker than any EQG movie because they need to appeal to the new audience. Maybe the second one(if the franchise don’t get canceled) will be better because they dont need to appeal the newcomers anymore.
Spoiler free review. I can’t bring myself to give half a shit what the original script was. Why? It’s not The MLP Movie, and that’s what I’m reviewing. I’m reviewing what the movie is, not what it could have been.
So, while I had astronomically high hopes, I had rather low expectations. Were they met? Well, as ShyDale mentioned, the animation was fantastic, and totally fluid; The CG got a little odd at some points, but even that was more or less solid. Excluding the mostly pop credits, the music was also really enjoyable, especially as my favorite genre.
The story… It was great, but quite impossible if Discord were a factor. There are other characters missing, but their significance would be questionable at best. But Discord really might destroy the story with his seemingly all powerful magic. But hey, we all know his weakness: Stone. They noticeably avoided several tropes, which I highly appreciate; Several times I expected something dumb and cliché, and it never happened. I don’t really like how suddenly it ended though; It leaves several questions unanswered, though nothing that can’t be assumed.
The characters? All of them were fun to watch. Without saying too much, the villain with the most screen time was my personal favorite, her body language spoke more of her personality than her words did, and it felt natural. Something I always appreciate.
Other than her, I can’t really say anything. Mostly because I’m not sure what’d get me banned.

The score will most likely get higher after the movie, given the positive reviews it got so far. That’s not a definite possibility, but it’s a good enough guess.
