Does the country were Equestria Girls takes place (equivalent to US?), uses Runic? The script on the map seems largely written in runic, with the not fitting symbols, seem to be changed/evolved runic letters.One could argue it’s written in “pseudo-runic”, as the text is encrypted, but Sunset read the text before, and it was readable, it just didn’t make sense. It also doesn’t seem Sunset can only read it, due to being from Equestria, as Pinkie and Sci-Twi don’t seem confused by it.Did Vikings found the US, or equivalent in the Equestria Girls world? Or conquered Europe, or it’s equivalent, causing a shift from Latin to a Runic writing system?

To be fair, it’s at least as probable the script on the map is “preudo-runic”, to make it more language-neutral.

People who make movies, videogames and animation among other things can use their research talents and skill about old mythologies, physics studies and advanced math to make a good story and/or piece of art. Less than waste of talent and more like impressive and neat viral advertising for food.
I think they call that wasted talent.
I think it’s pretty much implied that both the mirror world people and Equestrians speak the same language. I mean, from all the written script we’ve seen in the shorts it’s awfully similar to the one found in the show and there’s also the fact that both people can communicate with each other just fine. Some may chalk it up to portal shenanigans but at the same time it’s a reasonable stance to take.
Of course it’s just a cartoon in the end.
Well, as I pointed out, the decoded, outer wheel/ring, instead of the Latin Alphabet, has also some symbols, among them, a rune - as I mentioned bellow, the “Thorn”/“Thurisaz”/“Thurs” rune (upper-left, right above Sunset’s right hand thumb):

Although as I, and Background Pony #81BE mentioned, it may be due to have animation in the episode is localization friendly (as no modern nation really uses the runic script).

Yup, that’s a possibility, and would be quite interesting one.
It’s a fictionalized version of North America, so maybe there were two waves of colonization: one by the Horse-Vikings, bringing their runic alphabet with them, and the more traditional Horse-Columbian , bringing their Latin alphabet.
Well, it’s also possible the nation which Equestria Girls takes place in, could use multiple writing systems, like Japanese and Chinese, and the language is vaguelly English (seeing the Anglo-Saxon language was fairly closelly related to the Norse languages, and also used originally a form of the Runic script).
But I’m certainly overthinking this XD

Well, yes, but as I wrote, Sunset _read_the script, it just didn’t make sense, and at least one of the letter that are on the deoded part (the outer part), is evidently the “Thorn” rune:
