I would expect if they start as a small bug and evolve to a large bug, that all in-between stages would be bug like. I’m not trying to be difficult, just mentioning an observation of the natural order of life. Not suggesting a change or anything, it’s good as is.

Wanna elaborate your headcanon, please? I’d love to hear it.
Have a cocoon phase before the last Ocellus phase. That way the evolution would be not very abrupt.

From bug (insect) to turtle (reptile) to sabretooth (mammal), not exactly a real straight line up the evolution scale.
