I somehow got it mixed up. It was “filly” that was being used for both genders. It’s no less wrong, but I just feel stupid for getting my own reason for posting this wrong.

Yes but that is because Girl does not refer to a child. Neither does boy. They are totally interchangeable here, Mare and Filly are not interchangeable.

Actually, I think we can give that a as we still refer adult women as “girlfriends”, I’ve never heard a guy call his lover his “womanfriend”.

Colt cant be used for both genders. If someone wrote that they are wrong. That is not an opinion its a fact.

Not exactly, I’ve seen some people call fully grown stallions colts, same for calling fully grown mares fillies.
