I guess they haven’t bothered, because there hasn’t been much interest or demand for “Chaotix,” as it was an obscure Sega 32-X game, and fans are more partial to the Genesis trilogy, and CD.
That’s what I was saying about Sonic Gems (what did you think I meant when I said it ended up being cancelled from the final version?)
What’s completely baffling is that this was back in 2005. Why have they not attempted it since then?
Actually, “Knuckles’ Chaotix” was planned for “Sonic Gems Collection,” but was scrapped due to time constraints, and trouble emulating, or recreating the game. An entire page of unlockable artwork from the game is still included however.
“Knuckles Chaotix” did eventually get an official rerelease, but on the now dead “GameTap” service, (which was basically a Netflx-like subscription service for video games a decade ago) so it’s gone now unfortunately.

Yeah, the last official rerelease of “Sonic 3” was in the DS “Sonic Classics Collection” game, which was quite a few years ago.
I I got an AtGames cheap portable Sega Genesis device a few years ago, and because it was Sonic’s 25th anniversary, this edition of it included every Genesis Sonic game, except Sonic 3.
(Even Sonic & Knuckles, 3D Blast, and Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine were included.)
Save files probably aren’t the issue, as the included Sega RPGs can still save.
Except the PC version was the only one that changed the music of levels like Ice Cap Zone and Launch Bass Zone and the game has been rereleased many times since with the original music. It’s just that it’s also randomly skipped in some cases.
For example even though it was on both the Wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade, there was never a PlayStation Network version. And even though a lot of collections don’t have it. Some of them do have it.
Michael Jackson’s involvement. He helped compose some music in Sonic 3 so there’s some legal issues involving some songs.

Now if only they would release Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on smartphones too (seriously what’s with Sega constantly skipping that one in collections and ports?)
And what ever happened with getting Knuckles Chaotix rereleased? They know fans want it and made an attempt back with Sonic Gems for the GameCube (it ended up being cancelled from the final version). Then 14 years by and nothing happens…
