If you didn’t see the last episodes already, their friendship was never mentioned again after the episode. It’s said that Gabby was use for the plot then anything else.
The only problem I have with Spabby is that it came out of the blue–basically, the writers created this ship for the sole purpose of driving the plot of “Dragon Dropped”. That said, they were logical about it. Like the way they gave Spike his wings, they came up with a sensible explanation for WHY Spabby should be a thing.
