The vast majority of fanfics are terrible because the vast majority of everything is terrible. TV, movies, and music suffer the same ratio.
 
BUT, the worst fanfics are so, SO much worse than the worst movies and TV, because with fanfics you can have complete amateurs with zero talent putting stuff online. With more mainstream entertainment, the writer is always a pro, which doesn’t mean he’s any good, but means he at least can write in complete sentences. Probably.
 
The best fanfics can be as good as the best of any other medium. Good luck finding them in the sea of crap, though!

The overwhelming majority of fanfiction is shit, period. Ponies are not an exception.  
Of course you can find well written stuff, but you’ll need to be a picky, uncompromising asshole to get to it and even then you’ll be reading seven bad and two mediocre fics for every good piece.
 
Or you can just have shit taste in literature, that makes everything so much easier.
