@Vree
And really, what have you got against these people that must you purposely bring them up? (butthuuurt)
That they are ‘hypocrites’? Oh great. Welcome to the 4chan way of thinking.
@CocoaNut
And how are better than any of these? You come in this thread, start something over “lololol military atheists are crap”, the back up for your stuff is “it should be painfully obvious” ie. do not bother explaining anything, and claim to only have it out for the hypocrites, while acting that way. lol.
Whoopsies. Although that comment could work in and of itself as agreement to what you said. Militant atheism =/= atheism, just as militant feminism =/= feminism.
Wow. I’m fairly certain you’re just spouting rhetoric at this point. Also pretty sure you’ve never actually read the Bible or any other religious text, for that matter.
So:
Spouting rhetoric
Make claims about the Bible without having ever read it
No understanding of any religion aside from a few branches of evangelical Christianity (and a poor knowledge of those at best)
Don’t worry. You’re among friends with other internet militant atheists.
@CocoaNut
He did, because religion is a false tale of false god that nobody even understands.
Seriously, go take a bible, read it (like not much of people do today) and think clearly about it.
Islam, christianity… it’s not about what religion is telling you, it’s really about how a christian is far from his religion. Christians are accepted, because if they really listened to every and all rules in the bible, they wouldn’t be better than fundamentalist islamists.
Religion is brainwashing, seriously. I find life more amazing without it, no more being scared of unknown punishment.
>Points out why the entire video is BS and all the black swans
>No concern about any of it, not even the black swans, just insist that you’re right anyway.
Sure. Yeah. You go do that.
Also, did you miss the end of the video where he called upon atheists over the internet to apply social pressure to anyone that’s not an atheist? Heck, that was the ENTIRE point of the video. He was basically telling people that they should point out these claims to religious people, and if you knew anything of the Asch conformity tests, you’d know that it doesn’t matter how obviously BS the claims are if enough people put pressure on someone with them.
And he didn’t press anybody to atheism - he just showed that religion is mostly bullshit and most, if not all, christians spew out typical crap like “atheists are immoral”, and can’t really justify their own belief system. Atheism isn’t a belief that there’s no god, ateism is disbelief in god.
@CocoaNut
This guy is very smart, don’t underestimate him, I was impressed when I watched the rest of his videos. And yes, religion is mostly doing bad thing to people’s minds, seriously - healthy minded christians exist, but it’s not THAT big group like some would like to think. Just go to the deep south of America - Arizona, Texas etc, and you’ll understand. Jesus my saviour, I pleaed for the rain to stop and it stopped! And many other freaks… I’m not insulting all christians, but there are also weird people there. I’ve talked with many psychologists and psychiatrists, and they say that if someone has mental problems or is crazy, there’s almost 100% certainty that he’s religious this or other way. Not that all ateists are nice and sane - it’s just what I know.
Conversion to a religion aside from atheism happens in childhood (or those that have the mindset of a child)
Religious belief is based on fear
The success of a religion is based on popularity
The popularity of atheism on the internet is completely independent of it being the cultural norm and social pressure
People keep with a religion for the sake of social pressure only and have nothing to do with an individual’s actual beliefs (in other words, nobody could be of, say, Taoist faith if there isn’t already an established Taoist group in their lives)
Religions discourage questioning
Science requires atheism
So, in other words, this guy is spouting typical militant atheist crap.
#1 should be painfully obviously crap to anyone
#2 should be painfully obvious to anyone that’s studied anything other than Catholic and Evangelical Christianity
#3 makes presuppositions of its own, I suppose. Probably something about the church existing to itself, which ignores religions that are founded upon a lack of structured churches or even forbid their followers from giving to the churches
#4 I’ve already addressed when I mentioned Asch and conformity, and he even makes the argument to apply social pressure on people on the internet to become atheists.
#5 is disproven with me and many of my friends, who are of faiths that are unique to their region
#6 is disproven with Wesleyan principles, which are actually applied to some EVANGELICAL churches (Methodism comes to mind). In other words, he’s completely ignorant of even the narrow interpretation of religion against which he’s speaking
#7 ignores the many, many, MANY religious scientists (including, but not limited to, John Polkinghorne, Albert Einstein, and Sir Isaac Newton, the latter two especially had very interesting concepts of God, but none of which are religious)
In other words, that video is full of crap, and he completely ignores his own argument for why religions gain followers when he presses people to do the same with atheism (militant atheism, no less) on the internet.
It’s all about critical thinking. I find nothing bad with agreeing and disbelieving in god, but I do have a problem with no critical thinking about what’s next and the arguments, both pro-god and anti-god, so to speak.
I am aware. There are militant of most every group, and they aren’t always the majority. On the internet, however, atheism is the culture and, among those internet atheists, militant atheism is far more common than other militant parts of groups.
Also, I should point out that “militant atheist” also comes with a whole heap of arrogance, generally just a bit more than other militant groups, though perhaps that can be attributed to the age of most internet militant atheists.
I know a few atheists that aren’t militant, and I like them and respect their beliefs. My issue isn’t with them or any other non-militant member of any particular group; my issue is with the militant , especially the ones as hypocritical as militant atheists whose beliefs are based entirely on what internet culture tells them to believe, from the militant atheism to pseudo-skepticism to complete and total faith in anything that comes out of the mouth of anyone that uses a whiteboard or goggles as part of their job (actually learning science is a pretty sure way to stop worshipping scientists).
@CocoaNut
By militant you mean those who shove their thinking into others throats? We also have militant bronies unfortunately, but that doesn’t mean the idea is bad. There are idiots in every fandom and in any social group…
Well, the brony fandom is heavily internet-centric, and the internet culture really pushes atheism, especially militant atheism.
I think it’s kind of amusing how so many people couched in such arrogance over how “rational” they are are really just following the cultural guidelines without realizing it.
Ah, conformity. Solomon Asch would be proud.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t take issue with atheism. I take issue with militant atheism, especially the kind rooted in hypocrisy.
It’s Kirk Cameron, what do you expect, he’s the Christian fundamentalist equivalent of that “I’m enlightened by my own intelligence” douchebag
