I used to do something similar to my mare. There was something about focusing on a horses hoof that makes them feel curious about you. no one ever focuses on the hooves in a gentle way. they normally experience rough handling like trimming and hammering so when you gently hold them and kiss them the horse tends to feel calm and more at ease.
