When you comment on image you subscribe to it and get notification when someone else write something. Background ponies also get ones but I guess that’s when you have and post in anon mode.
I guess it doesn’t work for ones without .
Most of the time when something like this happens it’s because whoever was in charge of inserting an image there just did a quick image Google search. Then assumed it was an official image without knowing that fans draw show accurate fan art (or that it would be so popular it would be in the top results).
