It’s more of an estimation of the time it would take to locate a possibly hospitable planet, development of technologies needed to cultivate optimal environmental conditions, travel time and such. From my limited understanding of interplanetary colonization 500 years after the advent of extended space travel seemed a reasonable stretch of time.

Just start slow. Eventually after a 1000 years or so you should be able to work yourself free of them. After all you have all the time in the world to do it.
