I think it would’ve been more interesting if GW would’ve had it seem like the 13th black crusade was a failure, only to have it actually come out of the Maelstrom warp rift, an area that’s not’s quite as fortified as the Cadian Gate.

the results were while chaos won cadia via 40k they lost in bfg and imperial forces won more key locations other than cadia they
 
so abbys stuck on planet with no way to get more mortal forces due to his massive fleet loss
 
that’s why his current plan is using daemons
 
but dark angels have reform the legion (called every last successor chapter) and necrons are coming…

though, he did smash through the cadian gate.

For fucks sake, not all of Abby’s crusades were meant to break through Cadia.
 
One of them was the Gothic War, where he got the bigass Cube-like Death Star-esque weapons, the Blackstone fortresses. Another one he got his badass uber-daemon sword.
 
And it’s thanks in part to playing the long game and gathering up macguffins that he actually kicked the shit out of the Imperial fleet over Cadia and has a decent chance of overrunning the planet.

Given his track record, I think we can consider the 13th a failure ahead of time.
