You have a point. She was probably just like “What the heck?” But sense her voice actress isn’t that good, (not as good as Leslie Swan who voiced her in SM64) it was hard to tell her emotions.

And you know how people always point to the “I’m your MAMA?!” line from Peach in Super Mario Sunshine as an indicator that she’s kind of an idiot in the main series? I always got the impression that Peach was actually thinking, “Why would you even THINK that that’s true?” when she said that.
I think that’s just a headcanon, as they never tell you in the games. But as I said, the canon can be whatever you want when it comes to Mario.
