The sad part is that Peter Cullen himself doesn’t seem to realise that the Optimus Primes he plays nowadays from the Michael Bay movies or even the Aligned stuff are nowhere near as beloved as the G1 cartoon version. ired or respected, maybe. But I certainly wouldn’t refer to them as a surrogate father figure the way I would G1 Optimus.
G1 Optimus knew when to be tough and when to laugh. Some of my favourite scenes in the G1 cartoon are him trash talking Megatron or the other Decepticons, or even the humans. Even silly things like his pained, “Ow.” after smashing into a train in the Kreemzek episode, or him mangling things like sports terminology. All that stuff put together could make him seem pretty lame, but the kind of lame where you’d roll your eyes and groan, “Daaad!” even as you grinned. Most modern Optimus Primes are just too self-serious.
