It would depend if it was the former or the latter. If the latter, then they could conceivably still use them as long as their friendships stayed strong. The only times we’ve actually seen the elements not work was when 5 our of 6 of the mane 6 were discorded, and Celestia and Luna losing their connections after Celly banished NMM.
Heck, Sunset was able to corrupt and use the Element of Magic, and probably only failed (at least on the CHS side of the mirror) because Twilight was there to go ‘Lol, nope, that’s MY crown!’
Hmmm… Doesn’t the Rainbow Power work only when the is Good? Or merely if they maintain Friendship with the other Elements (even if all of them turn Evil)?
There’s a possibility they will lose their powers if they turn to the Dark Side.
Well, on the other hoof, she’s not leaving problems that will come back to bite her in a 1000 years like Celestia does.
To my mind comes a scene:
Twilight makes a blunder during her Welcome To Equestria dance.
Giants: “Hey! That offends us!”
Twilight: shrugs “Welp, I tried…”
Blasts them, leaving only a giant smoking crater behind.
Twilight: :D “Spike, what other Princessy Chores I have to do today?”
Spike: O.O “…uhhhh…”
