well the dragon in dragonshy wasnt dumb or low mental capasited he was able to speak and understand the reasons that why the ponies want him to leave the mountain also he didnt attack till rainbowdash kick him first  
rarity try to steal part of his treasure well ask him to take part of it  
pinkie pie she is nice and funny but not every one want to be wake up by strong noises  
spike was raised by ponies and didnt know how to deal with his dragon instincts so he was more posesive than the other dragons but not less mental capasited

i think is an irregularity by the fact that he was raised by ponies because if he was supposed to be with his mom then why he was summoned to compete?

there must be an age span to compete in the gauntlet of fire to make it fair because we didn’t see any dragon the size of the one in dragonshy or owl’s well that ends well episodes compete just the teen dragons so spike must be a teenager too he is just short for his age
