Yeah I’ve studied French revolutionary history quite thoroughly. Marie Antoinette never said “Let them eat cake” (and the supposed quote is ‘let them eat brioche’) and that phrase was not attributed to her until around 1841, 48 years after her death.

This was also an already-existing trope at the time, where people would tell stories of a noble lady telling starving peasants to eat something fancy when they’re clearly starving. This goes back to the 16th century at least (see Das Ander theyl der Garten gesellschafft).

So no, not a single person died over that statement, and it had nothing to do with the revolution or why they killed Marie Antoinette. If it did actually, I wouldn’t have put it in. It’s just a stupid joke, quoting something most people know she never actually said.
