I’ve been wondering the same thing! I think in the case of China it goes hand in hand with a shift in marketing strategy and an increased focus on the region by Hasbro. I think also it’s been popular for longer than you’d think there - it’s just in recent years it’s been more attention on Derpibooru (Credus and I have ed about half of all Chinese site-sourced art on this entire website). I don’t know much about Russian fandom, but I think regular collaborations like this certainly do well in keeping the community healthy.

I don’t think western fandom is dying exactly either - it’s growing immensely on sites like TikTok and Instagram, especially with teenagers. I’m a little iffy on how sustainable this is, or whether it can translate into more durable structures like conventions, but I’d like to imagine some of those people will find a lasting place in the fandom.
