I’m pretty sure people interpreted Sprout’s comments about Hitch being “handsome” and “strong” while ripping the calendar to be some sort of underhand gay commentary. On top of that, they’re the only two male characters who get any kind of meaningful relationship expressed, which alone would be enough to spark a ship in many cases.
I, for one, am all for it despite there being very little in the film to technically it.
