As long as they all lived in harmony, they would keep their magic.
That sounds like blackmail.
Instead of teaching them naturally to embrace and understand differences, they are having a part of their livilhood being held hostage if they don’t play nice.
A recipe for uneasy peace. That is not harmony. If anything it would build tension and resentment.
I would guess that’s what caused the races to eventually split! But that’s just speculation.
It’s very forced to have a single dark shadowy unicorn be able to make all the ponies hate each other after the series proper showed that there was a lot of work put into having every race, not just ponies, learn to get along. Understand each others cultures and embrace their differences. Whether or not the ponies are just “stupid” or whatever, this diminishes a major theme of the show and comics, as well as the character’s work. It also bugs me that this is happening so late in the series because even in the beginning there wasn’t this kind of discrimination within pony culture (correct me if I’m wrong).
Also, Twilight apparently gathered “all the world’s magic”. To affect just the ponies. Why did she need to gather the entire world’s magic? Was she just… not concerned about the other races? Making ponies the center of the world again.
And really, doing this is just further preventing G5 from having its own identity. There’s no point in having it take place thousands of years in the future if its events are just going to be tied back to the G4 era. They could have made new characters to do this. Start filling in that gap in history.
Well, I can only hope that these comics really aren’t canon and the show will have better history and explanations. All these different mediums are confusing the timeline a bit for me.
