You know, looking back on this, it is kind of interesting how the idea of “Luna/Celestia having a long lost evil sibling that would serve as the main antagonist” was somewhat adopted with the introduction of Opaline in G5.

Actually, Nightmare Moon’s real sister is Daybreaker and both Celestia and Luna don’t have an evil sibling. Nightmare Moon is actually an evil verison/split alternate personality/dark half/evil doppelgänger of Luna.

Well, the movie was originally going to feature Tempest Shadow as Celestia and Luna’s long lost brother Cosmos who is supposed to be the main antagonist of the film. But the film was changed, and Cosmos was taken out this movie. And his role was rewritten and replaced by the Storm King. And the Cosmos model was used as Tempest Shadow in the final film. So the makers would make sure that Celestia and Luna don’t have other siblings.

Cosmos is being used in the comics, and isn’t a pony. Cosmos looks like a weird mix between Discord and Tempest, despite them trying to make him Celestia and Luna’s brother from like Season 1-7.

Part of me wouldn’t mind so much , especially if it leads to backstory, but ultimately I’m glad they decided not to, because every idea I can think of for a villain sibling, at least in Celestias case, has already been done with nightmare moon.

It’d start the mother of all fan wars, but I would love to see something like that show up in the cartoon or comics. If only because then we’d get a little more backstory on Celestia and Luna.

That’s another of the things the book mentioned: the artists took everything in the movie as far as they could take it, and then distilled it so it wouldn’t be too far out of place with the rest of the world the series crafted.

Yeah, and apparently the book says the earliest concept for Cosmos was indeed Celestia’s brother. This is one of the later versions when they decided to make Cosmos a female, but still long before she became the Tempest we know now.
And it ended up being done so dumb instead.
