Can anyone recommend a good open source or otherwise free Vector animation program? Adobe Flash is the program of choice but it’s rather expensive. I want to create small gif animations, but doing it frame by frame takes forever.
I tried to toonboom but I couldn’t find a free version of it. Vectorian seems like a really basic clone of Adobe Flash. It’s good enough if you only need to make basic motion animations, ie better than nothing.
There is no free Toon Boom. The cheapest is their Flip Boom All-Star which is $39.
Next would be Digicel Flipbook which is more for traditional frame by frame animation. The starter version is currently $78. Find out more here: http://www.digicelinc.com/index.htm
Plastic Animation Paper was mentioned earlier. It is mostly a traditional animation program but can’t do finished scenes. They are updating it with new features which you can look at here: http://animationpaper.com/
And finally there is the free open source Pencil2D. It is still in Beta but has vector tools along traditional animation tools. Look for it here: http://www.pencil2d.org/
I have mostly posted my art on deviantArt. And yes, I have done animation for many years in my work in the industrial/technical fields. I started with traditional tools and methods. Even learning to ink and paint animation cels. But I have retired my Acme animation desk and 16mm animation cameras to go digital.
I do have a little animation I can show you. It’s of the Powerpuff Girls doing a hula. Drawn by hand on my Acme disk and then scanned into Toon Boom Studio where is was inked and colored. I generated an animated GIF from the file.
oh and I do want to apologize with me saying I hand out TOONBOOM for free.
Its not their newest version which has WAY more features.
I use the uned version of toonboom studio 4.5 it’s really nothing more than a glorified light board.
I did purchase toonboom 8 but im a suborn jackass and set in my ways.
I do encourage everyone to purchase to help the companies and people for making amazing products.
also i get joy in watching people think that the program i give them is gonna be a magic “make animation” button. Then they come by later to only bitch and complain how ToonBoom can’t do squat.
I haven’t upgraded Toon Boom in years. I have version 3.5. I have been concentrating more on my comic art and want to publish a webcomic. So I have been mostly working with graphic programs like Paint Tool SAI and GIMP.
I do like some of the newer features of Toon Boom and what it can do. In the old days it was enough just to animate a character on film. Today anything is possible.
I have always preferred the organic look of hand drawn animation. It will still be with us but with as much creative force as it once was. Especially when you can see even traditional animated fare becoming 3D-CGI.
