Dropdown menus

Work in progress, as with the rest of the site. This shiny thing delivered by our latest developer addition, barbeque.

It’s certainly less cluttered now, plus having the filter menu and reverse search just one click away is good. I can easily get used to them.

It’s much cleaner now but small thumbnails end up blocking the menu.

I like em, but they kinda go under spoiled images up at the top.  

 
Dunno if that’s a big deal or not, just looks kinda crappy, IMO.

I can easily get used to most of this. My only issue is that I feel that streams should continue to be their own button and not tied to the activity menu.

They’re fine.

Seconded. If it’s not too much work I think streams should either:
 
A: Be it’s own button
 
and
 
B: Have your dropdown menu show “favorited” or “subscribed” streams.

I’m really digging it. I’m sure you’ll be able to fix the thumbnail issue in due time, because I think this is a really good idea.

Thirded. Even though I’m notified when any subbed streams begin, having the button on view helps me know how many are live right away.

Fourthed. Streams kinda do deserve their own spot.

The top bar would look better if it were one straight horizontal bar instead of the right side being higher. I realize this may be unavoidable for s with long names.
 

 
Besides that and the aforementioned issue of the streams being hidden in the Activity drop down menu, I like this revision of the interface. It’s cleaner and quicker to access parts of the site.

I preferred watched, upvotes, faves, etc. having their own buttons.  
I know it’s just an extra click (or scroll-over) and I’ll probably get used to it, but I use them quite a bit.

Rolling the bar into one is something we’re considering. It’ll probably involve a fair bit of reshuffling, though.
 
Glad you’re all enjoying it - we’ll get the (small) bugs ironed out in the coming days!

The best part of these is that I only have to hover over the menus to open them. Definitely keep that behavior around.

actually there is a problem it, the menu crashed with the thumbail doesn’t work.

I’ve noticed a tiny usability problem with the menus: the “Activity”, “Forums” and “Tags” menus constantly end up covering the fave/vote/ buttons. I’ve already had several “get out of my way” moments as I have to move my mouse away from the menu to close it. It gets really annoying after it happens like ten times in a row.
 
It happens when you have lots of images one in several tabs, then change the tab and try to fave/vote/ and you move the mouse from the tab bar to the buttons. Bam! The menu opens and covers the buttons.

Actually, I take that back. I’d much prefer clicking to open the menus. Basically, I agree with JP.

Z-priority should be fixed now.  
Streams readded as their own button in the nav bar.
 
Other stuff will be looked into / discussed / etc

In the general “Tell us stuff that needs doing” thread, Mad Black made the suggestion to give menus a very small delay before they actually drop down. This is now implemented. Currently the delay is 150ms (which is afaik a fairly common delay for these things, or at least, my desktop seems to use the same) which should prevent the menus from expanding if you’re just moving over them, while still being responsive enough if you actually want to open them.

Seems and cool and all, but the site is getting more and more mobile unfriendly. :(

We do best-effort mobile - the dropdowns work on most mobile devices and a fix is in the work for some that it does not work on.
 
That said, yes, the site layout in general is massively mobile/tablet-unfriendly and generally terrible. We know this, we just don’t have the time/manpower to fix it.
