You know, I stopped reading Lost Light after the Protectobot issue. Nothing that happens to Getaway is going to make up for the atrocities he’d committed, and the other Autobots on the Lost Light are dead to me. Plus, the nudge gun is starting to get really, really annoying. No one thought, “Hey, let’s not leave this thing lying around,” after Getaway was revealed to be a predatory manipulator?

And seriously? Getaway was able to stop everyone from listening to the full message? The others couldn’t go, “No, we want to hear the whole thing.” Seriously? Nobody went, “Wait, I liked Nautica. She didn’t know any better. What happened to her?”

That said, I like that Mainframe is covering his ears. Also, I’m not planning on buying anymore issues until the traitors on the Lost Light discover a) Rodimus and the others not only survived the DJD, the DJD are all dead and b) those guys who apparently killed the DJD are coming after them. Because based on the looks of horror on their faces, that’s gonna be glorious.
@WM-R
Well this issue does a bit of a walk back for the LL crew.

They actually weren’t privy to all the details of Getaway’s little plan and weren’t too happy about some of the stuff he kept from them (like the “if you don’t agree with me you’re forgetting this conversation” thing) which was just the start of his leadership problems then he turns down a call for help from some aliens which obviously was a problem with Thunderclash and the others which then leds to the DJD message all that which has led him to some extreme measures to right his ship.

Personally I’m with Froid a little bit a find Getaway’s descent into megalomania fascinating.

That’s actually that thing that made me angriest about Star Saber being a nutjob. Why Star Saber? By Roberts’ own ission, it’s because Star Saber is a pretty big name, and he thought it’d be good to have such an established goody-good turn out to be a monster. But why single out Saber? Why not have the Brainmasters and/or Multiforce right there with him? I wouldn’t have been as upset if more recognisable Autobots were with him at Tyrest’s side. As it is, Saber was just chosen because enough people know about him that he’s important, but not enough people are fans that it’d be risky to use him in the role. Can you imagine how pissed people would get if it turned out Magnus was genuinely on Tyrest’s side and okay with genocide?

It’s the same reason people were so pissed with Zack Snyder casually revealing and then killing off Jimmy Olsen in Batman V Superman. Snyder thought it’d be funny, not realising there are people who actually love the character.

It was Star Saber because some of Roberts’s buddies in his fanfiction-writing days used to write Star Saber as a villain and he wanted to pay a tribute to his old friends, while doing it differently from how they did it.

Yes, really.

@Darth Prime

Yeah, that part I was aware of, but my issue was why was Star Saber the only (for want of a better word) canon character so warped? Having the big bads of that arc all be Autobots was interesting, as was the intention being pillars of society (religion, law and medicine) going horribly wrong. But having two out of the three brand-new characters with Saber being the only actual previously existing character was what rubbed me the wrong way.

If, for example, under Tyrest (representing law) we had Star Saber (religion), Pharma (medicine) and then we had the Brainmasters or Grandus or Sky Garry acting as a sort of elite guard then the Decepticon Titan-hunters beneath them, then I could chalk it up to, “Oh, it’s a whole bunch of them.”

Its similar to why I hated IDW Hellbat. Other than design or name, there’s almost nothing of the original character. Why use him, then? It’s like when that X-Men writer whose name I can’t came up with the idea of ‘secondary mutations’ because he wanted to use particular characters but they didn’t fit the story, so he changed them to fit said story.
@WM-R
One might argue that Cyclonus is warped since he’s nothing like the original but I guess there’s a different for a usual villainous character becoming a more-or-less good guy and the ultimate ultra good hero type becoming religious fascist.

But I was like that with Stevie when Costa was writing so whatever.
@Darth Prime

In Cyclonus’ case, even back in G1 cartoon he was still portrayed pretty positively. Like that bit where he saves Ultra Magnus and when asked why replies, “Warriors like you and I should fall in battle.” The worst thing you could say about him was he was pretty much Galvatron’s bitch, but even then he generally has a good head on his shoulders. In The Heasters he was awful, but at least in the Legends manga the writers go back to the ultra-competent Galvatron loyalist interpretation. There’s practically nothing praiseworthy about IDW Star Saber. He’s a self-righteous, holier-than-thou religious maniac who’s a coward to boot.

Um, I don’t get the Stevie and Costa reference, though.
@WM-R
g1 cyclonus was loyal to a fault but it’s that loyalty that makes him stand out among an army of backstabbers and traitors.

i honestly prefer tv shockwave over the comics even though he barely has characterization.

he carried out his promise to megatron to keep cybertron as is until he returns.
@OptimusPrimevil

Yeah, that’s why IDW Cyclonus still works as a version of G1 Cyclonus for me. He’s loyal to Cybertron proper and to those he actually respects or ires.

I have mixed feelings over the cartoon Shockwave over the comic version. I love his voice and his portrayal as being loyal only to Megatron, but comic Shockwave gets a lot more work. And I love how comic Shockwave tends to be written as a properly logical sort i.e. if emotion is more effective than logic, he’ll make use of emotion. If a course of action only has a 2.5% chance of succeeding, then it’s worth pursuing that 2.5% because it’s better than zero.
@WM-R
isn’t one of his most famous scenes just him saying “If you can’t beat’em ’em” when the dinobots were kicking his ass and just letting out all his pent up rage in a feral berserk frenzy?
@Thanotos Omega

Yeah, that was one of my favourite examples. I considered it to be the logical (tee hee) follow-up to that infamous bit in the old Marvel comics where he was fighting Scorponok, and Scorponok blasted him while he was pontificating about calculations.

I mean, usually ‘logical’-type characters are written pretty badly because a lot of writers fall for the “don’t think! Feel!” thing and so they’ll complain, “This course of action only has a 0.000001% chance of success!” and advocate not doing anything. At least Shockwave’s response would be “This course of action only has a 0.000001% chance of success. It’s still the best chance we have. We should try.”
@WM-R
Yeah people always seem to screw up that kind of thing, like for example Shockwave has known these people for millions of years, he should know by now that some of them will override logic and he should instead focus on working within their parameters, example, suggesting a course of action that involves blatant cruelty if he’s working with autobots will not achieve his goals, in fact it will hurt the situation by creating distrust in the group,
