My word choice may have been off kilter, so to clarify, Spike very much loves to help and helping his family is top of that list. Celestia saw this and gave him guidance/teaching on how to specifically help Twilight because of her various bad habits and to push her outside of them or make sure she didn’t forget the obvious.

You’re forgetting that Ember disguised herself to participate and was knocked out and would have drowned without Spike to save her, and Garble reached the chamber with the only opposition being Spike and Ember. That logically lead to the fact that had Spike NOT gone, Garble would have won the scepter. Granted, had Spike not existed, he wouldn’t have been around Garble and Garble likely wouldn’t care about ponies.

However, no, dragons are a high class danger that exceed almost anything else. They bathe in magma and while it’s a joke that Spike is slammed around, he never once has any physical damage on him, and the abuse Garble went through and was fit to fight off two dragons at the same time shows how durable they are. Also reminder that it was the entire backstory to one of the Pillars that they repelled two dragons with a trap.

You only have to play into Spike’s strengths but most of the writers never did so. Spike’s strength is being a realist and all of his antics with Starlight were a great showcase of this.
